A half hour later, I rush down the steps, taking them two at a time. I need to hurry. I’ve already wasted too much time just trying to get my head straight and compartmentalize all the hell that rushed to the surface from hearing the name of that place spoken after all this time.

Alana must’ve taken my fucking gun with her as protection on her supplies trip with Dean, because I can’t find it anywhere. How the hell did she even find it? I’d hidden it really well. If she’d wanted a gun, mine was her only option. Dean has the barn full of weapons locked up tight. He also locks his bedroom door at night—where he keeps his personal weapons. But me and Alana have been sleeping together in the master suite so the opportunity was there for her to take it when I’d fallen asleep.

It pisses me off to no end that she’d do that after all our talk about trust.

As much as I hate Dean, I feel better knowing that he’ll be able to keep an eye on her and stop her from doing anything impulsive like going after Cartwright behind our backs.

She thinks she’ll be okay to pull the trigger, but she won’t. She’ll choke. And choking will get her killed. I get that better than anyone, because I’ve lived through it before. I don’t want her to have to do the same; to learn the hard way.

I zip up my leather jacket against the cool breeze nipping at me.

It’s gonna be a long-ass trek to the main road and even longer to try to thumb a ride once I get there.

I’ve barely taken two steps towards the foot of the mountains when a thunderous rumble stops me in my tracks. It’s very distant, but that changes within mere seconds. The noise escalates, the ground beneath my feet reverberating from the force of it echoing around the still area.

And then I see them coming down the side of the mountains.

Bikes.

Six of them.

What the hell is going on?

As they near me, I can make out their cuts.

Steel Horse MC.

The club that Dean’s doing some work for.

Did he call them here?

We had a goddamn agreement that none of us would tell anyone where we were holed up—an effective way to minimize the risk of us being tracked down.

That idiot is putting the safety of all of us in jeopardy.

They ride down into the front yard, kicking up dust and dirt everywhere as they circle me first before coming to a stop.

It’s not lost on me that they’re actually surrounding me as all of them dismount.

I recognize their President, Blane, right away when he pulls his helmet off his shaved head. The piercings in his ears and face almost blind me when the light catches them. He clenches the fists of his tattooed arms as he walks up to me, stopping barely a foot away.

“Where’s the suit?” he asks, eyeing my tactical pants and worn leather jacket.

“Circumstances didn’t call for it.
